How to sleep better in 3 steps

How to sleep better in 3 steps

A bad night’s sleep can ruin your whole day, waking up tired makes you grumpy and annoyed with everybody and anything around you. And we often blame that lack of sleep on our minds not being at rest but surprisingly enough it can be as simple as having the wrong bedsheets and pillowcases.  So, if you are struggling to get a good night’s sleep I say it is time to take a closer look at your bed linen. Here are a few things to look out for on your next shopping trip.

Your Choice of Fabric

Materials like cotton are breathable and thus more comfortable to sleep on. Cotton sheets self-regulates your body temperature during sleep. So, it will keep you cool on warm nights and warm on colder nights giving you a restful night’s sleep.

And for a sleep that is good for you and the environment look for organic cotton. Because this cotton is grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers and is good for you, the environment, the grower, and the wildlife.

Bamboo is a natural softs fabric with a long sateen fibre weave and has been earned acclaim as the new vegan silk. Bamboo is organically resilient to pests, bacteria and bugs. And is grown without the use of nasty chemicals. Bamboo bed linen will keep you cool on those hot summer nights because it keeps the moisture from the body. And once winter is around the thickness of the sheets will keep you warm while still staying breathable. Bamboo is also great for allergy sufferers because it has built-in anti-bacterial properties.

Silk pillowcases have been the thing to have for a while now because it is just the best thing for your hair and skin.

And here is why;

  1. less friction on skin and hair and prevents irritation and damage
  2. It is a cleaner surface to sleep on
  3. And less drying for your skin and hair

Thread Count

First, what does it mean?

All this is, is the total number of yarns per square inch of fabric. A high thread count number is often associated with high-quality fabric because it is believed that it makes the sheets softer and more durable. But truthfully it depends on a lot more than a high number. It is often elements like the fibre quality and fabric weave that is more important. The thread count that hits the sweet sleep spot is often between 300 and 500 but before you buy remember to look out for the fibre content and construction of your sheets.

Bedding maintenance

Clean and fresh smelling bedding is just as important so be sure to wash new bedding at least two times before sleeping on it. This will remove dirt, fabric treatment residue, and linen enhancements such as starch that may have been used to package your bedding.   Check your detergents as well, if you are sensitive to dyes and perfumes be sure to wash your bed linen in fragrant and dye-free detergents. Try and wash your bed linen at least once every two weeks because fresh bedding promotes a night of restful sleep.
